Busses, trucks, trains, airplanes, and boats to transport passengers, mail, retail goods, lumber, coal, oil, and other resources can be used to see to other companies, industries and local governments that will pay you handsomely for them. The game gives you a great great freedom of choice, with no way necesarily being the best. You could decide to dominate the passenger industry by building complex bus systems and more expensive airports and jets, or maybe you want to be the sole provider of coal and oil to refineries with a thriving railroad setup.
Everything is up to you, but the competition will try to steal the business first. A great deal of detail was put into this game. For example, you decide to first focus on passenger transportation on an up and coming city using busses. You get to make the decision of what kind of busses to purchase, where they get repaired when needed, where you put the bus stops, exactly what route the busses take and what stops that actually go to, if they wait for a full load or not, and so many other things.
This all sounds kind of mundane at first, but the interface is very easy to learn and it ends up being a lot of fun. As time passes, you can choose to update to faster and more reliable busses, close down unprofittable bus stops, or alter routes to accomodate more passengers and more cities. The game gives you some great financial reports that makes it very easy to pick out what vehicles aren't making money over time so you can choose to either decommision them or change up their route.
Branching out to whatever kind of business venture you want is easy. Setting up a railroad transportation division is exactly the same as the other vehicles, so you don't have to relearn the interface. With other vehicles the amount and kinds of goods transported changes greatly, and where you can build you roads and tracks or the distance you can deliver changes. Typically, the greater the distance you deliver something, if you manage to do it in a reasonable amount of time, the greater the amount of money you get, but your profits can be cut short if it takes too long or if your vehicles are inefficient.
It's probably not a good idea to try and transport lumber across huge distances by truck, when it would cost much less to move it by train. Competition can get a little tricky, especially if you're not paying attention to what they're doing. Another company can swoop in while you're not looking at establish routes in areas that you are already in, or maybe in a neighboring town that hasn't been claimed yet so they get the first profits.
It can be very difficult, for example, to establish yourself as a passenger airline when it's already dominated by a huge airline company. The computer players are also able to build much faster than you ever can. The government also steps in and offers bonuses on to quick builders.
You'll get subsidy offers from the local governments of each town that will pay up to quadruple for a time for the first company to establish the required type of transportation routes. This can be a huge boost, especially early on, to get your company upgraded. There is also a multiplayer option where up to 8 people can play at once in a either a sandbox type game with no goal, or a race to a monetary goal. The gameplay, graphics, and controls are exactly the same although it offers modern resolutions with the old look , and plenty of additional features were added like better, and bigger random maps, the ability to download additional player-made AIs and other content.
An internet capable multiplayer mode, that I was very surprised to find dozens of active servers and games running, was added too. KC -3 points DOS version. Referring to the patches listed here for DOS and Windows download, what is the difference if any? Does anyone know? They both have the exact same ReadMe file, there is a version 1. Obviously, 2. I wish there was more info about these patches. Second, does anyone out there have any clue as to how a person might use the correct patch using say, Boxer or Dos Box? The ReadMe says there are switches that can be turned on or off to make different features work or not.
But once it is translated to a different format to make it playable Boxer making it playable on a Mac in my case I can not figure out how to set these switches. I am sure it would have to be done before hand in Dos, but I can not figure out how to do this.
Can anyone help? Thank you KC. KC 0 point DOS version. The patch may have added some features to the game, but it also adds some problems. For instance, if you are laying track and have a piece of track in the cursor, every time you move around the screen using the arrow keys and push the up button the track changes from laying track to removing track.
Very frustrating. And would be an easy fix to make it work right, so I wonder how much research went into the patch. A patch should fix things, not make them worse. But the original game limits how many trains you can manage, usually around 50, by simply making new trains not work correctly.
The patch supposedly fixes this, and maybe it does. But I can never get to fifty trains using the patch because of the annoying way the patch keeps changing the track while maneuvering the screen. This game can already be a challenge, I sure don't need the patch causing more frustration. Sunset 0 point. This isn't a clean copy of the game, this is a TTDPatch install. LP 1 point. This is a great game. An improved version of this game in my opinion though is "Open TTD". Which is pretty much the same, except with more content.

I would NEVER have believed anyone who had told me that a train business-simulator would make me laugh out loud, get sweats when making risky investments, or trying new crazy designs of centralized roundabouts handling traffic of a whole continent etc Just brilliant and still very playable!
My friend and me would play this in LAN for days on end when we were , great times : Especially with all the great creative ways to sabotage the other players efforts haha. This game and the normal are both great very challenging even when no pc opponent.
Only one problem not major but they could have had other vehicles on the roads and so on. The editor is nice so you can create your own scenarios. Also would have been nice if you could have controlled the speed of the game for those of us who get impatient easily On a scale from I give it a 4 over all.
Now If I break it down and so graphics difficulty and so on I have to keep in mind the age of the game. It was advanced in 95 for a simulation game. I give for sim a 4 difficulty 5 gfx I'm going to have knock it down a partial point to 3. Labels still appear often over towns even when you turn this feature off most the time. Sound and music 4. Sound fx are decent nothing highly special. But again even with the minor flaws have keep in mind the original date of the game and so forth.
When comparing to say Sim City, both had their ups and downs. Sim City you could set tax rate. Here you can't set any prices but you can borrow money if need be much more than Sim City allowed.
Sim City the trains are all predefined in size and what they carry. Transport Tycoon made it more realistic in that you define the type of train and what it carries where they stop and so on. I can't comment on the boats or the planes since I yet to be able to get a town allow me to place either in their area. I can see though that you can't define the size of the airport as you can in Sim City But again I still yet to be able to place an airport so no comment on it otherwise.
